Glossary entry

ASIC

An application-specific integrated circuit designed to perform a narrow set of computing tasks very efficiently.

Why it matters

ASICs matter because specialised hardware choices influence the economics of AI training and inference, especially in large-scale or sovereignty-focused deployments.

In AI economics, the hardware path chosen can change capacity planning, utilisation, and total cost significantly. For the wider hardware cost view, see AI TCO Framework.
